Why choose Wynnum Dentists

Types of Dental Implants

There are different types of dental implants depending on your needs:

Single Dental Implants

A single cosmetic dental implant is applied when only one of the patient’s teeth are missing. Dental implants are applied in two parts. First, a titanium post is inserted into the gum to replace the missing root. This will provide the tooth with support and strength. A crown or denture is then placed on the post to replace the missing tooth.

Full Dental Implants (All On 4)

In the case of advanced decay or the majority of teeth missing, simple dental implants might not be able to do the trick and a Full Dental Implant alternative may be recommended.

Multiple Dental Implants

Multiple dental implants are applied the same way as single dental implants, but will require more work as multiple implants will be placed to replace a few missing teeth. You may be a candidate for single or multiple implants if you are missing one or more teeth in between healthy natural teeth. Candidates must also have healthy gums, jaw bones and oral hygiene standards.

Funding your dental implants

Understanding the cost of treatment is an important part of planning your next step. During your consultation, our team can guide you through the payment and funding options that may be available for your treatment plan.

Options we can discuss include:

  • Payment plans through selected providers
  • Potential health fund rebates, depending on your provider and level of cover
  • Accessing superannuation if eligible

We aim to give you a clear understanding of costs, timelines and available pathways, so you know what to expect before proceeding.

Considering dentures instead?

Dental implants and dentures both replace missing teeth, but they work in different ways. Dental implants replace the missing tooth root and can support a crown, bridge or denture, while removable dentures sit over the gums.

If you are looking for a fixed option that feels more like a natural tooth in everyday life, implants may be worth considering. Dentures may still be appropriate for some patients, particularly when a removable option is preferred or surgery is not suitable. A consultation can help determine which option is most appropriate for your oral health, bone support and goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do dental implants hurt?

Local anaesthesia is used during implant placement. Some discomfort after the procedure is common and typically managed with recommended care instructions and medication as advised by your dentist.

Ongoing studies continue to review how dental implants perform over extended periods. For example, research by Howe et al., which evaluated outcomes across 18 clinical studies, found that dental implants showed a reported 10-year survival rate of 96.4%. Oral hygiene, lifestyle, general health and regular dental check-ups all contribute to implant longevity.

Every patient and procedure is different. The entire process includes consultation, surgical implantation of the titanium post, healing and osseointegration, then the placement of the crown or prosthetic tooth. From start to finish, this process normally takes a few months.

Suitability depends on bone density, oral health, and general health considerations. A comprehensive assessment is required to determine if implants are appropriate.

The process includes assessment, planning, implant placement, healing and integration, abutment placement and final restoration. Each stage is tailored to the patient’s oral health needs.
